San Francisco, 12 Sept 2024 – The Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance (the Lab) is set to launch its 2025 Call for Ideas on September 26 to select at least nine ideas for development. The Lab is looking for proposals for innovative solutions to overcome barriers to climate investments in emerging markets and support the transition to a net-zero economy, with a special focus on:

  • Sectors: Adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Each sector will select one idea.
  • Regions: Brazil, Southern and East Africa, India, the Philippines, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Each region will select one idea, except for Latin America and the Caribbean, which will select two.

Selected Lab ideas will receive a comprehensive support package that includes expert guidance, technical assistance, funder mapping, networking opportunities, and pilot implementation support. The Lab program is designed to accelerate innovative climate finance solutions in emerging markets.

The Lab, an initiative of over 100 public and private investors and institutions, accelerates solutions to drive private investment at scale and support sustainable development goals in emerging markets. Created in 2014, the Lab has launched 68 instruments that collectively mobilized over USD 4 billion.

“As the Lab’s prominence, and number of focus sectors and regions have grown in recent years, there is a need to optimize our approach to ensure a better proponent experience, as well as greater transparency and efficiency,” said Climate Policy Initiative’s Associate Director Ben Broché, who leads the Lab’s efforts.

In 2025, the Lab is introducing a new two-phase application process designed to reach a broader pool of financial instruments trying to scale private investment in emerging economies. Here is how it will work:

  1. Preliminary Application
Interested applicants can submit their preliminary applications from September 26th to November 7th.
  2. Full Application
The most promising applicants for the Lab’s 2025 cohort will be invited to submit a complete application (November 21st to December 12th), offering additional details about their proposed concepts, allowing for a more detailed evaluation.

The Lab will host four informational webinars covering the application process, selection criteria, and the Lab process:
